RuleBindery
For independent TTRPG publishers

Change a rule after layout is done. Nothing breaks.

RuleBindery keeps your rules as structured, typed data and your book layout as a separate, derived view. Fix a spell's damage the night before you export, and every page, cross-reference, and errata note updates itself — no relayout, no retyping.

The wall is between playtest and layout

Designers avoid opening their layout tool until the rules are frozen — because every change after that point means redoing the layout by hand. RuleBindery removes the wall.

Draft

Rules live in Docs or a notebook. Fine, for now.

Import your draft, or write it here. No lock-in either way.

Playtest

Feedback arrives in Discord threads, emails, and margin notes — detached from the rule it's about.

Playtesters, editors, and licensors comment right on a passage or a single statblock field. Reviewers never take a seat: up to 3 on Free, unlimited on Publisher and Studio.

Layout

Once content moves into InDesign or Affinity, presentation and content fuse. Every rules tweak becomes a layout job.

Layout is derived from your content, automatically. A rules change never touches a page file.

Post-launch

Errata means re-opening the layout file, finding every affected page by hand, and re-exporting.

Snapshot two versions, get a structural diff and a formatted errata document in one action.

Built for the job after the first draft

Write here, or import what you already started — either way, this is the pipeline that survives revision.

Structured authoring

Statblocks, spells, and items are typed entities, not paragraphs. Rename one and every reference across the whole project updates on its own.

A validator that catches problems before print

Broken references, undefined keywords, incomplete tables, and overflowing sections are flagged while you write — not discovered in the proof.

Layout that adapts, not breaks

Automatic flow, keep-together blocks, and a generated table of contents, index, and cross-references. You never place a manual page break.

Versioning and errata, built in

Every change is recorded. Snapshot a version, and diff two of them in plain language — "Fireball: 8d6 → 7d6" — then generate an errata document from that diff.

Your files, always

Everything is plain Markdown and JSON on disk. Full project export is available any time, to every account, even a lapsed one.

Human-authored by design

RuleBindery never generates prose, statblocks, tables, or art, and never trains on your content. In a market that penalizes AI-assisted books, that's a promise, not a feature flag.

How it works

01

Draft or import

Start from a blank project, or bring in a Word doc, Markdown, or a CSV of existing entities.

02

Structure into entities

Turn a monster, spell, or item into a typed record once. Reference it anywhere with @-mentions.

03

Validate and lay out

The validator and the layout engine run as you write — see overflow and broken references immediately.

04

Export

An unwatermarked screen PDF and a self-hostable HTML SRD, generated from the same source, every time.

Not another layout tool

Affinity is free now. Homebrewery is free and always has been. We don't compete with them on visual control, and we won't pretend to. RuleBindery is what you reach for when the book has to survive contact with a rules change — content that stays structured, validated, and editable, for as long as the book is alive.

Questions

Is RuleBindery free to use?
Yes — the Free tier has no time limit: unlimited projects and entities, the full editor and validator, watermarked draft PDF, full source export at any time, and your work stored on our servers rather than only in your browser. The paid Publisher tier ($12/mo or $110/yr) adds unwatermarked screen PDF, HTML SRD export, errata documents, and import.
Do playtesters and editors need a paid seat to give feedback?
No. Invite them to a project as reviewers: they read it and comment right where the rules are — on a passage or a single statblock field — and never take a seat. Free includes up to 3 reviewers; Publisher and Studio include unlimited reviewers, who can also suggest edits you accept or reject. Reviewers only see the project you invite them to.
Does RuleBindery use AI to write any of my content?
No. RuleBindery never generates prose, statblocks, tables, or art, and never trains on your content — not as a hidden feature, not on the roadmap. It's a permanent product policy, not a setting you turn off.
Can I get my files out if I stop paying?
Yes. Full source export — plain Markdown and JSON on disk — is available to every account, including free and lapsed ones. On lapse you keep full read, edit, and source-export access; only paid export targets re-lock.
What happens to my layout when I change a rule after it's already laid out?
The layout regenerates automatically from the updated content. Page flow, the table of contents, the index, and cross-references all update with it — you never open a page file by hand.
Does RuleBindery need a connection?
Yes — your projects live on our servers, so RuleBindery is an online tool. A brief drop mid-sentence isn't a problem: edits already made are held and sent when you're back. And because full source export to plain Markdown and JSON is always available, you can keep your own copy on disk that doesn't depend on us at all.
Can I import a draft I already wrote elsewhere?
Yes — Word documents, Markdown, and CSV entity data all import. Nothing is silently dropped: content RuleBindery can't map to a structure is kept as plain paragraphs and flagged in an import report.
